Choosing the Right Karate School

Picking a school for your child (and maybe even your self) requires some important questions to be asked. Some questions need to be asked to yourself and others to the owners of the school. Ask yourself, what am I looking for my child to receive from this training. Some answers could be learning self defense, self discipline, develop increased focus and leadership skills.

When you visit a Dojo (karate school) observe what but more importantly how classes are being taught. If you find the right school for your child it may affect him/her the rest of their life. I recommend visiting a few until you find the right one. I know you pass many restaurants until you get to the one that you like the most.

Good questions for the teacher would include: What is the focus of your classes. Who is your teacher and your teacher's teacher. Do you have testing fees or belt fees? If so how much are they? How many days per week can my child attend? Is there a Registration Fee? (A big red flag). What is the required contract commitment: 3 months, 6 months, 1 year? Please understand, studying martial Arts DOES require commitment to achieve your above stated goals of self defense, self discipline, improved focus and leadership skills.

However, I personally avoid high pressure sales with long term commitments. To offer an example, Traditional Okinawan Karate is open six days per week. New students are allowed to try 2 weeks of free classes. All Students are allowed to attend an unlimited schedule. Tuition is a flat fee with no additional fees of any kind (No belts fees/testing fees/registration fees).

In conclusion, picking a Martial Art School for your child is an important decision which can have a life changing effects on them. My hope is that this article helps you become an educated consumer.
